If you have been paying any attention at all to what is going on in the online world right now, you are probably already aware of the pervasiveness of blogging, and how it has taken the entire online community by storm. You probably know one or two people who are knee deep into blogging right now, and you may even be a regular blogger yourself. Blogging is truly an immensely popular pursuit you'd better believe it, and that popularity is expected to grow even more exponentially over the next few years.
But what exactly is blogging and what makes it so immensely popular? And perhaps more interestingly, how can you benefit from this rampaging global phenomenon that has the entire online world in its grips?
All those questions can perhaps be partially answered by the realization that people have a fundamental need to interact with other people, in as many different ways as possible. The Internet has opened up so many avenues for ideas exchange and even simply basic communication that our list of contacts grows at an exponential rate. It is this unquenchable thirst for touching base with people that has ensured the steady growth and popularity of blogging.
Of course, there are other ways to reach out to other people online, and avenues such as email and message boards remain in widespread use. Nevertheless, few can compare to blogging in terms of immediacy and free flowing discourse. Instant messaging offers an even more instantaneous means of communication to be sure, but it isn't really ideally suited to lengthy discourse.
Blogging truly has come a long way since its earliest incarnations as a sort of online diary or journal. Other uses were found for blogs in the academe and corporate setting, where they were used as simple announcement pages. Early blogs where then little more than informational pages in which bloggers passed on information to their readers. Over time however, blogging has evolved into a platform in which both sides can participate almost equally in the discourse. This gave rise to the present incarnation of the blog as a place wherein everyone has a voice.
The potential for the blogging medium is vast, and we have yet to see just how far this cultural phenomenon will grow. Whatever the future holds for blogging, one thing is certain, and that it will continue to evolve in numerous ways.
